Est. 1875 · La Romana, Dominican Republic (US market)

Romeo y Julieta.

The Dominican Romeo y Julieta operates on the philosophy of preserving Cuban-style construction and elegance while operating outside of Cuba. The brand favors balanced, medium-bodied profiles built around Connecticut Shade or Ecuadorian wrappers with multi-country fillers. The Reserva Real line uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and a triple-blend Dominican-Nicaraguan-Peruvian filler — a representative example of the brand's approach to non-Cuban Romeo y Julieta production: smooth, complex, and approachable for both newcomers and experienced smokers.

History

House Story

The Romeo y Julieta marque was established in 1875 in Cuba by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin García. The brand takes its name from Shakespeare's tragedy. Between 1885 and 1900, the brand won numerous awards at international tasting exhibitions — the gold medals depicted on the Romeo y Julieta logo today commemorate those wins.

The brand truly came into its own after being acquired in 1903 by José "Pepin" Rodríguez Fernández, a former head of the Cabañas factory in Havana, through his firm Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cia. Rodríguez expanded the brand internationally, and Romeo y Julieta became one of the most globally recognized Cuban cigar names. After Rodríguez's death in 1954 at age 88, and following the 1959 Cuban Revolution and nationalization of the tobacco industry, the brand split. The Cuban version remained under Habanos S.A.

La Romana, Dominican Republic — production for the US market

The non-Cuban version was relocated to La Romana in the Dominican Republic, where production for the American market continues today under Altadis U.S.A. (a subsidiary of Imperial Brands). The Reserva Real, Romeo by Romeo y Julieta, and 1875 Vintage lines are among the contemporary releases produced for the U.S. market. Both Habanos S.A. (Cuba) and Altadis U.S.A. (Dominican Republic) currently use the Romeo y Julieta trademark in their respective territories.
